Was D’souza’s point not that the apostles had more evidence than we do in that as the companions of Jesus, if anyone, they would have known that Jesus was not God?
That’s because the apostles were slighly more delusional than today’s Christian. Today’s Christian is a combination of being deluded and misinformed. Actually, I have more respect for the apostles because they didn’t have as much evidence at the time that contradicted their god; not their fault for buying into it. Modern Christian’s are more ignorant in the sense that they refuse to make the best use of modern knowledge or our slighly more evolved reasoning abilities.
By the same argument, all religions are true since there are people from all relgions willing to die for thier god(s). We know that they can’t all be true, however. It makes more sense to say that they must all be equally false since they all have the same amount of CREDIBLE evidence for their god(s): NONE.
Sorry Hitch, but I do a much better Bertrand Russel impression than that and I’m a yank.

Judging by your perceptions, I wonder if you’ve had any church experience outside of a small minority fundamentalist type. I grew up in a conservative church, but we thrived on debate about stuff we couldn’t understand. Working on my theology degree right now, the professor always throws questions at us that are intended to make us rethink our presuppositions. Ironically, I just got out of a chapel where the speaker encouraged us to debate with other Christians about our doubts and questions.

Even if they have doubt, they’re too afraid, TERRIFIED, HORRIFIED to voice their doubt, it would be instant social-suicide.
That is simply not true. I cannot think of a single xian I know who does not doubt his faith from time to time and wrestle with the idea that he might be wrong. I’m a xian and I have considered the possibility I am wrong thousands of times. No xian believes God will throw us into Hell for having doubts or thinking through what they believe. As theologian Paul Tillich said, “Doubt is not the opposite of faith, it is an element of faith.”
Evolution is clearly not faith based. You only say it is, because of your lack of knowledge on it. That’s why you people are against evolution in the first place, you can’t understand it. And it is a FACT now. Even the Vatican accepts it. The fact that you obviously don’t, as your fiery comment shows, makes you ignorant and uneducated. Sheep. Why can’t you people ever give a reply without insults? Intolerant much?
